Purple RetroPie GPA Now On eBay & Discussion Of Translucent Shell Mods

IMG_4076I have just listed the second Game Pie Advance (GPA) on eBay. You can find it at http://www.ebay.com/itm/322244673538.

As you can see, this build is a purple shell, and I think it turned out just as nice as the first (black) build. I’ve been taking a lot of photos during these builds, and I plan to be using them for some DIY instructions at some point.

IMG_4039As I have been working on building up more GPA units, I’m coming across some interesting things I wouldn’t have anticipated. One of the builds I worked on last week was a translucent “glacier” shell. I really thought that translucent shells would look really cool and give you a glimpse at the Pi inside. After building that one I realized that the translucent shells have an upside and downside for this sort of modding.

Yeah, you can see the Pi in there, and you get a better idea that the system is not stock. I think it can be a nice way to show off the mods done. Click on the photo, and you can see the “Raspberry Pi” logo inside through the shell.

What you can also see are all the Dremel cuts I made and the imperfections that they caused. If you were very careful and didn’t make any unintended marks in the shell, I think this could turn out very nice, but the opaque black and purple shells don’t show any of the issues you might cause modifying the shell. Note that adding a GBA serial number sticker to the back would cover up most of the “problem” areas while still leaving some of the cool factor.

I guess I don’t know if I have any recommendations here. I was considering ordering some other translucent shells, but I’ll hold off for now. I don’t have all the other parts to build up more units at the moment, anyway.
